Falsification Policy

Policy Statement

Students are expected to act with honesty and integrity in all academic, professional, and personal matters at Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech). Falsifying information undermines the trust essential to a safe and fair learning environment. Any intentional or reckless falsification will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.

Definition of Falsification

Falsification includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Knowingly furnishing or possessing false, falsified, or forged materials (e.g., medical records, transcripts, certifications, or academic submissions).
  2. Creating or altering documents, accounts, or records with intent to deceive.
  3. Providing false identification or financial instruments to Washburn Tech or affiliated entities.
  4. Submitting false statements, accusations, or reports in any academic, disciplinary, or administration process.
  5. Withholding, omitting, or misrepresenting information when honesty is required.

False Reporting

Washburn Tech takes false reporting seriously. Presenting information known to be false - whether in an incident report, grievance, complaint, or statement - constitutes falsification. The Academic Integrity Policy addresses falsification of academic work. False reporting wastes institutional resources, erodes trust, and may harm others.

Students are reminded that:

  • Reports must be made in good faith.
  • Providing intentionally false or misleading information in any process or investigation is a policy violation.
  • Submitting a false allegation against another individual is a serious offense and may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or dismissal.

Sanctions

Violations of the Falsification Policy will result in sanctions determined by the Student Conduct Hearing Officer or designee. Sanctions vary based on the severity, impact, and intent of the falsification and may include any sanction listed in the Student Code of Conduct. Repeated or egregious violations, or those causing significant harm, will likely result in more severe sanctions.

Student Responsibility

By enrolling at Washburn Tech, each student affirms their responsibility to act with integrity and to avoid providing false information. Students are encouraged to report concerns honestly and accurately, even if they do not know all the facts. This policy is not intended to discourage reporting of any kind; rather, it ensures reports are made in good faith so that all matters can be reviewed thoroughly and fairly.
