Graduate Certificate in the Science of Literacy
Overview
The Graduate Certificate in the Science of Literacy is a 12-credit hour program that will include five courses providing candidates a foundation for the Science of Literacy program. This program delves deeply into evidence-based practices, equipping candidates with the tools to understand and implement effective literacy assessment and instruction in Grades P-12. Throughout these courses, candidates demonstrate their ability to apply evidence-based literacy instruction in their classroom/ school.
Student Learning Outcomes for Graduate Certificate in The Science of Literacy
At the conclusion of the certificate program, candidates are expected to have:
- the knowledge and skills necessary to apply the principles of structured literacy in the P-12 classroom
- the knowledge and skills necessary for effective writing instruction in the P-12 classroom
- the knowledge and skills necessary for effective literacy instruction in the various disciplines found in middle and secondary schools
- the knowledge and tools to assess and support student literacy development using a structured literacy approach
