Math Pathways Overview

Washburn University participates in the Kansas Board of Regents systemwide math pathways initiative.

Math Pathways is a national mathematics reform movement that empowers students by providing a modern mathematics education. It includes key components such as the selection of gateway math courses to fulfill the general education requirement, multiple placement measures, and corequisite developmental support when needed, all focused on equipping students with the skills they need to succeed in their courses and prepare them for the world.

Math Pathways in Kansas achieves this by:

• Gateway Math Courses: Offering students options for gateway math courses to fulfill the general education requirement tailored to their majors, recognizing that content other than College Algebra is more relevant for many fields of study. These options include College Algebra, Contemporary Math, and Elementary Statistics.
• Multiple Placement Measures: Allowing students to demonstrate college readiness for math through multiple measures, rather than relying solely on a standardized test.
• Corequisite Developmental Support: Providing corequisite developmental support when needed helps students avoid delays in completion that are often associated with traditional remedial math courses.

Some programs require an advanced math course beyond the general education curriculum requirements. In these situations, students who qualify to enter the advanced math course should do so, thereby fulfilling general education and program requirements.

The gateway math course for each bachelor’s program at Washburn University is specified in the degree requirements documented for each program. Gateway course requirements are in alignment with systemwide decisions to promote seamless transfer with other participating schools in Kansas.

Accuplacer QAS: 255 or higher OR
GED^® Math Score: 160 or higher OR
HS GPA and Course Grade: 3.00 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and C- or higher in Second Semester Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 OR
Washburn University MA 112/MA 113 Placement Exam Score of 50% or higher

MA 116 College Algebra

Math ACT: 22 or higher OR
Math SAT: 540 or higher OR
ALEKS PPL: 46 or higher OR
Accuplacer QAS: 263 or higher OR
GED^® Math Score: 165 or higher OR
HS GPA and Course Grade: 3.25 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and B- or higher in Second semester Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 OR
Washburn University MA 116 Placement Exam Score of 75% or higher

Students who do not meet any of the placement measures listed above will register for a gateway math course that includes additional instructional time and support, to promote student success.
